Weekend gaming: Persona Q, Code Name STEAM, Majora's Mask & Borderlands The Handsome Collection

Lots of gaming to discuss - mostly portable, and mostly good. After a lengthy run with Persona Q on the 3DS, I tried to get my steampunk on with Code Name STEAM only to abandon it for another Zelda adventure in Majora's Mask

On the Xbox One side of things I've been dual wielding Borderlands titles courtesy of The Handsome Collection. Good times!

Finally put Persona Q to bed after 120 hours with the game. For a title that I didn't think had the same amount of content as Persona 4 Golden I sure spent a ton of time with it.

The end had its ups and down but overall I give the title stellar marks in all characters. Great music, characters, gameplay and presentation. The mapping of the labyrinths turned out to be way more engaging than I ever would have anticipated and added a wonderfully addictive gameplay element on top of all the action.

I was sad to see the credits roll but I'm glad that it's over. Easily the top contender for my 2015 GOTY (yes, even though it was released in 2014).

Sigh... I really wanted to like Code Name S.T.E.A.M., but the game fought me tooth and nail, and finally won. It's a shame, but after less than 10 hours I'm calling it quits on this title.

There is just way too much inconsistency when it comes to STEAM's tactics that make enjoying it damn near impossible. For everything good STEAM brought to the table it brought along two to three annoyances that destroyed it.

For example, Overwatch Mode is supposed be a key tactic, but it is completely unreliable. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Same for when enemies employ it. I was in the middle of one of my turns focusing on two enemies in front of me. I fired at one, then, without moving, targeted the other when WHAM! an enemy BEHIND ME knocks me out with overwatch. They hit me a full minute into my turn even though neither of us had move spaces?!?!? It's just absurd.

On top of busted tactics and gameplay elements (don't even get me started on the sniping enemies) I just never came around to the design of STEAM. I like the concept, but the art is chunky, the music is horrendous and the voice acting is agonizingly annoying and repetitive. These are things I would have tolerated had the gameplay been solid, but that unfortunately isn't the case.

Even the update to speed up enemy turns just works against the game. Now, enemy turns no longer take ages to complete. Instead, they go by at ludicrous speed, so fast that you can't tell what on earth is happening.

So, you set up your turn, finish and then BAM! the enemy is done and you have no clue really waht transpired. Oh, aside from seeing more enemies respawn on the battlefield which is yet another thing STEAM does that makes me want to slap it.

As I said, I wanted to like this game. Even after my concerns with the demo I still picked it up on launch day. Sadly, the game is getting tossed out at this point. I just don't have the heart to keep at it anymore.

The only upside to quitting on Code Name STEAM is that I'm finally ready to tackle The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask on the 3DS.

Wow, does this game look beautiful. I had tried to play it via the Gamecube a few months back, but it looked so muddy that it was nearly impossible to enjoy. Thanks to this remake, the game is sharp and vibrant and looks stunning running in 3D.

I'm not very far yet, but I'm already addicted. No doubt I'll finally be seeing this one to completion.

After all that solo gaming it's time to round things out with a good does co-op shenanigans with both Borderlands 2 & The Pre-Sequel. Interesting to be playing two Borderlands titles at the same time, though the Pre-Sequel content doesn't strike me as strong enough (yet) to stand on it's own legs.

I'm enjoying playing both games, even more so now that we have +Billy Guinigundo along for the ride. This still room for one more in case anyone cares to join.

That said, I'm not nearly as enthused about firing up either Borderlands title when I'm solo. It's not quite the same experience.

Looking forward to hitting up the content I never got around to in Borderlands 2, as well as working my way through The Pre-Sequel with you guys. Tuesday?

That's all the gaming I was able to manage. Would have played more Majora's Mask on the bus this morning, but my 3DS's battery was damn near dry.

Charging it up though for my commute tonight.

Anybody else playing anything fun?
