Behind the Scenes: The Lego Awakens "The Droid... Stole a Freighter?"

"The droid... stole a freighter?"
This has to be my favorite line from The Force Awakens. I mean, Kylo Ren's tone and delivery is 100% Dark Side Jackass. It doesn't get better than that in Star Wars. Darth Vader would be proud.

The source:

In the clip, Kylo slowly turns to face the unfortunate officer relaying the news that "they were unable to obtain the droid on Jakku". The whole scene is excellent with Kylo freaking out and trashing the console as well as force grabbing/choking the officer.

I've read a lot of negative stuff on-line about Kylo Ren, but I absolutely love the character. I love how unhinged he is, and I'm excited to see him grow and develop as the saga continues.

The setup

I've been debating on how to build backgrounds for my photos, and during a curious internet search I found a tremendous resource over at DioramaWorkShop.com. If you are interested in setting up your own Star Wars toy shots I highly recommend you check the site out.

They have lots of templates that you can download and print- one of which I used for the background in this shot.

Though not screen accurate for The Force Awakens, I opted to use a backdrop from the Death Star in A New Hope. I thought it was close enough to the source image to pass.

Initially, I just cut out the image, folded it to give it some depth and shot away. Upon reviewing my shots though,  I felt the control panel appeared too dull and flat in the images.

I wanted to make it pop a bit more, so I added a flashlight behind the panel with a blue gel over it.

That added just the definition I was looking for and gave the display screen a bit more believability.

Here is the before (top) and after (bottom) look at the images. In Lightroom I opened up the shadows, added some more saturation to the red control panel, and changed the hue slightly.

Oh yeah, in Lightroom I also had to clone out a hair that sprouted out of the top of Kylo's helmet.

Rule #1 when shooting toy photos is make sure to dust off your toys before you shoot. I did not follow this rule and look what happened... ugh...
